Bible Study Update

We discussed some issues which have been in the news lately and approached them from a biblical perspective. One major issue which has been in the news as of late is abortion. It is clear murder is sin in the Bible, however the complexity comes in regard to what constitutes human life. We studied scriptures which while they do not contradict each other because of own individual context, they can however, be used to support two alternate views on life. Jeremiah 1:5 can support the view that life begins at conception while Genesis 2:7 supports the view that life does not begin until you actually can breathe.

Also, we spoke on contraception and what scripture says about it. Here we studied a case whereby God cursed Onan (Genesis 38:9-10) for not impregnating his widowed brother’s wife. However, some theologians differ on whether he was struck dead due to spilling his seed or for disobeying God or both. We also, studied the text which commends all humans to be “fruitful and multilply”(Genesis 1:28) and discussed what that means in relation to contraception.

The third social issue we addressed was gay marriage. We reviewed many scriptures in both the Old and New Testament which condemns homosexuality as an abomination. ( See Leviticus 20:13 and Romans 1:26-27) The discussion hence shifted toward the federal and state government’s role in marriage which is and should still be solely a religious institution. Lastly, we spoke on how the government should be no respecter of person as it relates to the law and how everyone should be treated equally.

The Bible Study at this time began to speak on a topic that is heavily mentioned in the Bible much more so than the above, and that is the treatment of the poor and how believers should support, defend, and advocate for them. Here we studied a plethora of scriptures namely James 1:27, Mathew 25:31-46, Dueteronomy 24:14 (worker’s rights) Exodus 22:25-27 & Leviticus 25:35-37 (condemns usury or interest) and many many more which covers several liberal ideals and practices.
